For the sixth consecutive year, the Swiss sesame oil market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 8.5% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +44.3% against 2014 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports from Switzerland
In 2021, approx. X tons of sesame oil were exported from Switzerland; increasing by 188% against 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sesame oil exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 97% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Germany (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of sesame oil exports from Switzerland, together accounting for 92% of total exports. India, Austria and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7.7%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in India (with a CAGR of +334.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for sesame oil exports from Switzerland, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany amounted to -7.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+24.4% per year) and the Netherlands (+57.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average sesame oil export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -36.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted noticeable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 97%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+19.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Switzerland
In 2021, sesame oil imports into Switzerland reduced to X tons, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year's figure. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +38.4% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
In value terms, sesame oil imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +42.1% against 2014 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 41%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest sesame oil supplier to Switzerland, accounting for a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, sesame oil imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany amounted to +8.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+8.0% per year) and the Netherlands (+17.5% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sesame oil to Switzerland, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany amounted to +11.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+8.4% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+87.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average sesame oil import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 13%. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
