In 2021, the Swiss stranded wire market increased by 485% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decline. Stranded wire consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 30%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, stranded wire exports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

China (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of stranded wire exports from Switzerland, together accounting for 36% of total exports. Austria, France, Australia, Italy, South Korea, the Czech Republic, India, Ukraine, Brazil and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +156.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), China ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for stranded wire exported from Switzerland worldwide, together accounting for 34% of total exports. Austria, France, Spain, South Korea, the Czech Republic, Brazil, India, Australia, Italy and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 44%.

Ukraine, with a CAGR of +95.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average stranded wire export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (+0.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of stranded wire, ropes and cables, when their volume increased by 29% to X tons. In general, imports, however, saw a mild reduction. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, stranded wire imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight setback. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of stranded wire imports to Switzerland, with a combined 79% share of total imports. Austria, Turkey, Hungary, Spain, France and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +20.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of stranded wire, ropes and cables to Switzerland, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with an 8.5% share.
