In 2021, the Swiss synthetic rubber market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 78%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, synthetic rubber exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

France (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main destinations of synthetic rubber exports from Switzerland, together accounting for 70% of total exports. Belgium, Slovenia, Italy, the Netherlands, the United States, Austria and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +55.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the largest markets for synthetic rubber exported from Switzerland worldwide, with a combined 58% share of total exports. From 2020 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, synthetic rubber imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight curtailment. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest synthetic rubber supplier to Switzerland, with a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, synthetic rubber imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany amounted to +4.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+25.5% per year) and Italy (-11.4% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of synthetic rubber to Switzerland, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 6.9% share.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
