For the third consecutive year, the Swiss talc and steatite market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 2.7% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then plummeted in the following year.

Slovenia (X tons) was the main destination for talc and steatite exports from Switzerland, with a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, talc and steatite exports to Slovenia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Austria (X tons), more than tenfold. Indonesia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Slovenia totaled +162.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (+80.1% per year) and Indonesia (+5.7% per year).

In value terms, Slovenia ($X) remains the key foreign market for talc and steatite exports from Switzerland, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with a 2.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 1.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Slovenia amounted to +175.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (+64.3% per year) and Indonesia (-4.0% per year).

In 2022, the amount of talc and steatite imported into Switzerland fell to X tons, with a decrease of -6.3% on 2021. Overall, imports saw a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 53%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, talc and steatite imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a modest increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Austria (X tons), Italy (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of talc and steatite imports to Switzerland, together comprising 74% of total imports. Germany, Finland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Brazil, China and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.
