After two years of decline, shipments abroad of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff) increased by 56% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 68% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, tobacco exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a tangible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 189% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Turkey (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the main destinations of tobacco exports from Switzerland, together accounting for 74% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +171.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Algeria ($X) and Turkey ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for tobacco exported from Switzerland worldwide, together accounting for 60% of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +213.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average tobacco export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -20.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 73%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+19.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Switzerland
In 2021, supplies from abroad of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff) decreased by -6% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, tobacco imports expanded to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of tobacco to Switzerland, with a 32% share of total imports. Moreover, tobacco imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), twofold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany totaled -2.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (-12.0% per year) and the Netherlands (+29.1% per year).
In value terms, the largest tobacco suppliers to Switzerland were Sweden ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 63% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Russia, Denmark, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Malaysia, Turkey, Croatia, the United States and Brazil, which together accounted for a further 30%.
Among the main suppliers, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +285.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average tobacco import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 11% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while the price for the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+35.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
