Whisky Market Size in Switzerland

The Swiss whisky market rose slightly to $X in 2022, increasing by 2.7% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the market value increased by 9.3%. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Whisky exports from Switzerland contracted remarkably to X litres in 2022, with a decrease of -64.6% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 482%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X litres, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, whisky exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 211% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

Germany (X litres) was the main destination for whisky exports from Switzerland, with a 32% share of total exports. Moreover, whisky exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X litres), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Netherlands (X litres), with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany amounted to +23.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+31.4% per year) and the Netherlands (+2.3% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for whisky exported from Switzerland were the UK ($X), Germany ($X) and China ($X), together comprising 52% of total exports. Denmark, Taiwan (Chinese), the Netherlands, Ireland, France and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

Among the main countries of destination, Denmark, with a CAGR of +92.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average whisky export price amounted to $X per litre, jumping by 113% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price posted a temperate increase. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per litre in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, the UK (X litres) constituted the largest whisky supplier to Switzerland, accounting for a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, whisky imports from the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X litres), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Ireland (X litres), with a 4.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the UK was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+1.7% per year) and Ireland (+2.8% per year).
