The Tanzanian market for anise, badian, fennel and coriander dropped to $X in 2022, falling by -5.9% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a tangible increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Production of Anise, Badian, Fennel And Coriander in Tanzania

In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander production contracted slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 183%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the average anise, badian, fennel and coriander yield in Tanzania contracted modestly to X kg per ha, almost unchanged from 2021 figures. In general, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by 3.8%. The anise, badian, fennel and coriander yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the anise, badian, fennel and coriander harvested area in Tanzania amounted to X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The anise, badian, fennel and coriander harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the amount of anise, badian, fennel and coriander exported from Tanzania contracted slightly to X tons, therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. In general, exports recorded a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 157% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports plummeted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 183%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Iran (X tons) was the main destination for anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports from Tanzania, accounting for a 95% share of total exports. Moreover, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports to Iran exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Iran totaled +87.2%.

In value terms, Iran ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports from Tanzania, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Iran stood at +84.5%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average export price for anise, badian, fennel and coriander amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -26.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Iran amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+25.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

After four years of growth, overseas purchases of anise, badian, fennel and coriander decreased by -70.7% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a dramatic descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 63% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports faced a dramatic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

The United Arab Emirates (X tons), India (X tons) and Pakistan (X kg) were the main suppliers of anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports to Tanzania, together comprising 100% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Pakistan (with a CAGR of +3.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), India ($X) and Pakistan ($X) appeared to be the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander suppliers to Tanzania, together accounting for 100% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Pakistan, with a CAGR of +0.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average import price for anise, badian, fennel and coriander amounted to $X per ton, growing by 2.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
