The Tanzanian broom, brush, and mop market dropped to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -8.1% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption enjoyed perceptible growth. Broom, brush, and mop consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 155% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, broom, brush, and mop exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 85% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Kenya (X units) was the main destination for broom, brush, and mop exports from Tanzania, with a 44% share of total exports. Moreover, broom, brush, and mop exports to Kenya exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by South Africa (X units), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Kenya amounted to -2.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.7% per year) and South Africa (-2.9% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for broom, brush, and mop exported from Tanzania were Kenya ($X), South Africa ($X) and Zambia ($X), with a combined 73% share of total exports. Democratic Republic of the Congo, China, Rwanda, Uganda, Malawi and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Among the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +29.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average broom, brush, and mop export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 123% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Turkey (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malawi (+17.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Brooms, Brushes, And Mops

Imports into Tanzania

In 2022, supplies from abroad of brooms, brushes, and mops increased by 4.6% to X units, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, imports posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, broom, brush, and mop imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 84%. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of broom, brush, and mop to Tanzania, with a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, broom, brush, and mop imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X units), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates (X units), with a 1.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +7.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+13.5% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-15.0% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of brooms, brushes, and mops to Tanzania, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with an 8.6% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +3.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+16.0% per year) and South Africa (-11.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average broom, brush, and mop import price amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -13.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
