After two years of growth, the Tanzanian market for candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery decreased by -2% to $X in 2022. In general, the total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
Production of Candies, Sweets, and Nonchocolate Confectionery in Tanzania
In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery production expanded to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Tanzania
In 2022, approx. X tons of candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery were exported from Tanzania; increasing by 86% on 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 224%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 182%. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) was the main destination for candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports from Tanzania, accounting for a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X tons), threefold. Uganda (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 18% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Democratic Republic of the Congo totaled +23.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+35.5% per year) and Uganda (+14.9% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exported from Tanzania were Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Uganda ($X) and Rwanda ($X), together comprising 93% of total exports. Burundi lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 6.6%.
Burundi, with a CAGR of +40.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average export price for candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -33% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burundi ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burundi (+0.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Imports of Candies, Sweets, and Nonchocolate Confectionery
Imports into Tanzania
In 2022, purchases abroad of candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery decreased by -37.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 205%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imports declined markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 234%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Kenya (X tons) constituted the largest candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery supplier to Tanzania, accounting for a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imports from Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by China (X tons), with a 5.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Kenya stood at -3.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-9.9% per year) and China (-1.0% per year).
In value terms, Kenya ($X) constituted the largest supplier of candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery to Tanzania, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 6.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 3.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Kenya stood at -3.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+1.1% per year) and Zambia (+60.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average import price for candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
