Carbon Dioxide Market Size in Tanzania

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 243% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, carbon dioxide exports reached $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 256% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Zimbabwe (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) were the main destinations of carbon dioxide exports from Tanzania, together accounting for 95% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +34.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Zimbabwe ($X) remains the key foreign market for carbon dioxide exports from Tanzania, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Zimbabwe stood at +18.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zambia (+7.0% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+31.4% per year).

In 2022, the average carbon dioxide export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 31%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Tanzania

In 2022, supplies from abroad of carbon dioxide increased by 61% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 91%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, carbon dioxide imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 77%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Kenya (X tons) was the main carbon dioxide supplier to Tanzania, with a approx. 99.9% share of total imports.
