Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 540%. The exports peaked at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, smart card exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 390% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa (X units) was the main destination for smart card exports from Tanzania, with a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, smart card exports to South Africa exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Zimbabwe (X units), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Uganda (X units), with a 4.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to South Africa stood at +93.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zimbabwe (+60.5% per year) and Uganda (+45.4% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for smart card exported from Tanzania were South Africa ($X), Zimbabwe ($X) and Uganda ($X), with a combined 98% share of total exports.

South Africa, with a CAGR of +95.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average smart card export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 88% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mauritius (+279.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Smart Card Imports

Imports into Tanzania

In 2022, the amount of cards incorporating an electronic integrated circuit (smart card) imported into Tanzania soared to X units, picking up by 16% compared with 2021. In general, imports saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 141%. Imports peaked at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, smart card imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 130%. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

India (X units), the United Arab Emirates (X units) and China (X units) were the main suppliers of smart card imports to Tanzania, together comprising 68% of total imports. Thailand, Egypt, Taiwan (Chinese), France, Vietnam and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Egypt (with a CAGR of +214.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), China ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) were the largest smart card suppliers to Tanzania, with a combined 52% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Egypt, with a CAGR of +266.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average smart card import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, dropping by -17.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 59%. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per unit), while the price for India ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
