In general, exports, however, saw a sharp reduction. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cigars and cigarillos exports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a sharp shrinkage. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Uganda (X kg) was the main destination for cigars and cigarillos exports from Tanzania, accounting for a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, cigars and cigarillos exports to Uganda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X kg), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Uganda amounted to -24.0%.

In value terms, Uganda ($X) remains the key foreign market for cigars, cheroots and cigarillos exports from Tanzania, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Uganda amounted to -22.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mozambique (-35.4% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-62.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cigars and cigarillos export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 22%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mozambique (+23.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Tanzania

For the third year in a row, Tanzania recorded growth in overseas purchases of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos, which increased by 0.3% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 165%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, cigars and cigarillos imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 139%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X kg), the Netherlands (X kg) and Switzerland (X kg) were the main suppliers of cigars and cigarillos imports to Tanzania, together accounting for 79% of total imports. South Africa and Nicaragua lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +70.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), South Africa ($X) and Switzerland ($X) were the largest cigars and cigarillos suppliers to Tanzania, together accounting for 78% of total imports.

South Africa, with a CAGR of +72.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cigars and cigarillos import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -43% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 16% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nicaragua ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
