Consumption of peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, production of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +5.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production of hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres in Tanzania reduced slightly to X kg per ha in 2022, stabilizing at 2021. Overall, the yield indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, yield of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres increased by +10.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the average yield of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres were harvested in Tanzania; remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 19%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the harvested area of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres decreased by -37.1% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 215%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 197% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

China (X tons) was the main destination for exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres from Tanzania, with a 72% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Saudi Arabia (X tons), sevenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to China stood at +29.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+4.1% per year) and Spain (+9.4% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres exports from Tanzania, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with an 8.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China totaled +32.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (+12.0% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+2.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average export price for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 9.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Tanzania

In 2022, overseas purchases of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres increased by 3.1% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 332%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 302% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre supplier to Tanzania, accounting for a 70% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), twofold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands amounted to +18.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-4.2% per year) and China (+59.1% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres to Tanzania, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 29% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands stood at +22.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+4.6% per year) and China (+50.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average import price for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 33%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
