Coconut Market Size in Tanzania

The Tanzanian coconut market shrank modestly to $X in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. In 2022, the average coconut yield in Tanzania fell to X tons per ha, which is down by -5.9% on 2021 figures. In general, the yield continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the yield increased by 21%. The coconut yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The coconut harvested area in Tanzania expanded notably to X ha in 2022, growing by 6.3% compared with 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. In 2022, overseas shipments of coconuts increased by 81% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coconut exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a sharp decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 405% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main destination for coconut exports from Tanzania, with a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, coconut exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Zambia (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by South Africa (X tons), with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United Arab Emirates totaled +86.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zambia (0.0% per year) and South Africa (+111.7% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for coconut exported from Tanzania were Sweden ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for 85% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +55.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average coconut export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -71.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 62%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Egypt (-2.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Coconut Imports

Imports into Tanzania

In 2022, approx. X tons of coconuts were imported into Tanzania; with a decrease of -22.7% on 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded slight growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 562%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coconut imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded modest growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 553% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Malaysia (X tons) constituted the largest coconut supplier to Tanzania, accounting for a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, coconut imports from Malaysia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Kenya (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Malaysia totaled +9.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+19.7% per year) and Kenya (-14.8% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Kenya ($X) appeared to be the largest coconut suppliers to Tanzania, together comprising 98% of total imports.

The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +21.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

The average coconut import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 61% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+14.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
