For the third consecutive year, the Tanzanian common pottery market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 88% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a slight descent. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Comoros (X tons) was the main destination for common pottery exports from Tanzania, accounting for a 37% share of total exports. Moreover, common pottery exports to Comoros exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uganda (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United States (X kg), with an 8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Comoros amounted to +95.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (+55.2% per year) and the United States (+0.6% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for common pottery exported from Tanzania were Uganda ($X), Singapore ($X) and South Africa ($X), together comprising 36% of total exports. The United States, Mozambique, India, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Burundi lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Comoros, with a CAGR of +68.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average common pottery export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -56.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burundi ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Comoros ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burundi (+20.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Tanzania
Common pottery imports into Tanzania skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, jumping by 71% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest common pottery supplier to Tanzania, with a 85% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), with a 2.4% share of total imports. The third position in this ranking was held by Spain (X tons), with a 2.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled -1.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-13.9% per year) and Spain (+9.2% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of common pottery to Tanzania, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 7.4% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 4.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+23.5% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-11.9% per year).

The average common pottery import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 29% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
