In 2022, purchases abroad of crude petroleum oil was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2014, thus ending a seven-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, faced a precipitous slump. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, crude oil imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a dramatic downturn. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the main crude oil supplier to Tanzania, accounting for a 94% share of total imports. Moreover, crude oil imports from South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X kg), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from South Africa totaled +22.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-39.5% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-50.8% per year).
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constituted the largest supplier of crude petroleum oil to Tanzania, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 10% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from South Africa stood at +21.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-35.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-49.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average crude oil import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 64%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
