Market Size for Evaporated And Condensed Milk in Tanzania

In 2022, the Tanzanian evaporated and condensed milk market increased by 1.6% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, showed a deep downturn. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Evaporated and condensed milk exports from Tanzania declined modestly to X tons in 2022, shrinking by -3.4% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 618%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, evaporated and condensed milk exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 329%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Malawi (X tons) was the main destination for evaporated and condensed milk exports from Tanzania, with a 97% share of total exports. It was followed by Burundi (X kg), with a 3% share of total exports. Comoros (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 0.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Malawi amounted to +41.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (-18.2% per year) and Comoros (-18.1% per year).

In value terms, Malawi ($X) remains the key foreign market for evaporated and condensed milk exports from Tanzania, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Burundi ($X), with a 1.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Uganda, with a 0.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Malawi amounted to +40.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (-21.1% per year) and Uganda (-19.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average evaporated and condensed milk export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -4.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 147%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Comoros ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+34.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Evaporated And Condensed Milk

Imports into Tanzania

Evaporated and condensed milk imports into Tanzania surged to X tons in 2022, jumping by 27% on 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 81%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, evaporated and condensed milk imports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 127% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) constituted the largest evaporated and condensed milk supplier to Tanzania, with a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, evaporated and condensed milk imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X tons), fourfold. Singapore (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United Arab Emirates amounted to +1.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+19.1% per year) and Singapore (-2.8% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of evaporated and condensed milk to Tanzania, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United Arab Emirates amounted to -4.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+11.5% per year) and Singapore (-10.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average evaporated and condensed milk import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -36.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 57%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
