The Tanzanian market for fish fillets and other fish meat was estimated at $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 73%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports of remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, exports of fish fillets and other fish meat shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 40% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for exports of fish fillets and other fish meat from Tanzania, accounting for a 24% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of fish fillets and other fish meat to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), twofold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Netherlands stood at +3.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (-10.5% per year) and Spain (-0.4% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the key foreign market for fish fillets and other fish meat exports from Tanzania, comprising 24% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 9.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the Netherlands amounted to +3.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (-8.2% per year) and Spain (+0.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average export price for fish fillets and other fish meat stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -12.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 61%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Tanzania

In 2022, supplies from abroad of fish fillets and other fish meat decreased by -2.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, imports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 284%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, imports of fish fillets and other fish meat fell markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 208%. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Oman (X tons) constituted the largest fish fillets and other fish meat supplier to Tanzania, accounting for a 29% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of fish fillets and other fish meat from Oman exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Norway (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Seychelles (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Oman was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Norway (+50.9% per year) and Seychelles (0.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest fish fillets and other fish meat suppliers to Tanzania were Norway ($X), South Korea ($X) and Seychelles ($X), with a combined 64% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Norway, with a CAGR of +68.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average import price for fish fillets and other fish meat amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -24.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 121%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while the price for Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (+11.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
