In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Tanzanian fish parts market, when its value decreased by -29.9% to $X. In 2022, overseas shipments of fish heads, tails and maws were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 296%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fish parts exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 648%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons), Rwanda (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) were the main destinations of fish parts exports from Tanzania, together comprising 71% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of +127.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) remains the key foreign market for fish heads, tails and maws exports from Tanzania, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 3.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Rwanda, with a 2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Hong Kong SAR totaled +79.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+103.6% per year) and Rwanda (+118.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average fish parts export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -47.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 121%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+28.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Tanzania
In 2021, purchases abroad of fish heads, tails and maws decreased by -28.4% to X kg for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports showed a dramatic decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 19,300%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fish parts imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 26,675%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X kg) was the main supplier of fish parts to Tanzania, with a approx. 100% share of total imports.
From 2013 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +32.5%.
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of fish heads, tails and maws to Tanzania.
From 2013 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +99.0%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average fish parts import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 41% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for China.
