Overall, exports, however, recorded a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 318% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fresh beef carcase exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 397% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Qatar (X tons) was the main destination for fresh beef carcase exports from Tanzania, accounting for a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, fresh beef carcase exports to Qatar exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kuwait (X tons), more than tenfold. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Qatar amounted to +116.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kuwait (+10.5% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (0.0% per year).

In value terms, Qatar ($X) remains the key foreign market for fresh or chilled carcases of beef and veal exports from Tanzania, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kuwait ($X), with a 4.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Qatar stood at +117.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kuwait (+12.9% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (0.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average fresh beef carcase export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -1.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, fresh beef carcase export price decreased by -9.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 46%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Kuwait ($X per ton) and Uganda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Comoros ($X per ton) and the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Tanzania

Fresh beef carcase imports into Tanzania dropped dramatically to X kg in 2022, waning by -78.1% against the previous year. In general, imports saw a precipitous setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 82% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh beef carcase imports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a sharp downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 151%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Italy (X kg) was the main supplier of fresh beef carcase to Tanzania, with a 98% share of total imports. It was followed by Norway (X kg), with a 2.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy stood at +25.8%.

In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of fresh or chilled carcases of beef and veal to Tanzania, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Norway ($X), with a 23% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Italy amounted to +2.1%.

In 2022, the average fresh beef carcase import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -95.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a precipitous shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 38% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while the price for Italy amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+62.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
