In 2022, the Tanzanian market for gingerbread, sweet biscuits and waffles was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 31%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of gingerbread, sweet biscuits and waffles increased by 87% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 90% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a temperate expansion. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Burundi (X tons) was the main destination for gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle exports from Tanzania, with a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle exports to Burundi exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uganda (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Comoros (X tons), with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Burundi amounted to +6.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (+54.6% per year) and Comoros (+11.0% per year).

In value terms, Burundi ($X) remains the key foreign market for gingerbread, sweet biscuits and waffles exports from Tanzania, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uganda ($X), with a 5.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Rwanda, with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Burundi amounted to +13.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (+67.3% per year) and Rwanda (-25.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average export price for gingerbread, sweet biscuits and waffles amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Comoros ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+8.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Tanzania

For the third year in a row, Tanzania recorded decline in supplies from abroad of gingerbread, sweet biscuits and waffles, which decreased by -41.4% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 611% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle imports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 206% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle supplier to Tanzania, with a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X tons), sixfold. Oman (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India totaled +18.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+23.4% per year) and Oman (-4.3% per year).

In value terms, the largest gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle suppliers to Tanzania were India ($X), South Africa ($X) and Kenya ($X), with a combined 71% share of total imports. The United Arab Emirates, Zambia, Turkey and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

Zambia, with a CAGR of +39.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average import price for gingerbread, sweet biscuits and waffles amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -9.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 97%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
