From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, plastic household articles exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 527%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Burundi (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) were the main destinations of plastic household articles exports from Tanzania, with a combined 83% share of total exports. Comoros, Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Malawi (with a CAGR of +30.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Burundi ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Rwanda ($X) were the largest markets for plastic household articles exported from Tanzania worldwide, with a combined 90% share of total exports.
Burundi, with a CAGR of +43.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average plastic household articles export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 43%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Comoros ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (+26.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Plastic Household Articles Imports
Imports into Tanzania
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of household articles and toilet articles of plastics, when their volume decreased by -68.2% to X tons. In general, imports showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 114%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, plastic household articles imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 176% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of plastic household articles to Tanzania, accounting for a 44% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic household articles imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), twofold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +30.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-17.8% per year) and India (+18.5% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of household articles and toilet articles of plastics to Tanzania, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to +32.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-15.1% per year) and India (+21.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average plastic household articles import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 50%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+4.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
