Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Burundi (X tons) was the main destination for medical instruments exports from Tanzania, with a 48% share of total exports. Moreover, medical instruments exports to Burundi exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X tons), threefold. Comoros (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Burundi totaled +134.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+62.3% per year) and Comoros (+116.8% per year).
In value terms, Burundi ($X) remains the key foreign market for instruments used in medical sciences exports from Tanzania, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Comoros ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Burundi amounted to +81.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Comoros (+52.8% per year) and Germany (+68.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average medical instruments export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 1,032% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zambia (+7.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Tanzania
In 2022, imports of instruments used in medical sciences into Tanzania reduced to X tons, falling by -9.9% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 116%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, medical instruments imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 86% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

China (X tons), Germany (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of medical instruments imports to Tanzania, with a combined 67% share of total imports. Denmark, Rwanda, the United Arab Emirates and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of +254.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest medical instruments suppliers to Tanzania were China ($X), Germany ($X) and India ($X), with a combined 60% share of total imports. The United States, the United Arab Emirates, Denmark and Rwanda lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 56%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
