In value terms, jute and jute-like fibers exports contracted notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 261%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

China (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main destinations of jute and jute-like fibers exports from Tanzania, with a combined 42% share of total exports. Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Ghana, Benin, India, Egypt, Pakistan, Senegal, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +36.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X) were the largest markets for jute and jute-like fibers exported from Tanzania worldwide, together comprising 43% of total exports. Spain, Nigeria, India, Ghana, Benin, Egypt, Senegal, Pakistan, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +49.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average jute and jute-like fibers export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -2.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 24%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Senegal (+9.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Jute And Jute-Like Fibers

Imports into Tanzania

In 2022, the amount of jute and jute-like fibers imported into Tanzania contracted modestly to X tons, which is down by -3% compared with the year before. Overall, imports recorded a precipitous setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 224%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, jute and jute-like fibers imports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 185% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of jute and jute-like fibers to Tanzania, accounting for a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, jute and jute-like fibers imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Kenya (X kg), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Bangladesh (X kg), with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States totaled +392.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kenya (-27.1% per year) and Bangladesh (-24.5% per year).

In value terms, Bangladesh ($X) constituted the largest supplier of jute and jute-like fibers to Tanzania, comprising 84% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with an 8.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 2.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Bangladesh amounted to -6.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-20.4% per year) and Kenya (-27.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average jute and jute-like fibers import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a temperate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 79% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
