Exports from Tanzania
After six years of decline, shipments abroad of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) increased by 11,556% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a dramatic contraction. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, paper and paperboard exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 1,450% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Uganda (X tons) was the main destination for paper and paperboard exports from Tanzania, with a approx. 99% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Uganda stood at +18.0%.
In value terms, Uganda ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) exports from Tanzania.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Uganda totaled -14.3%.
Export Prices by Country
The average paper and paperboard export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -97.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 83%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Uganda.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Malawi amounted to +41.2% per year.
Paper And Paperboard Imports
Imports into Tanzania
In 2022, purchases abroad of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) increased by 84% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 382%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, paper and paperboard imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 305%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main suppliers of paper and paperboard imports to Tanzania, with a combined 100% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +46.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest paper and paperboard suppliers to Tanzania were China ($X), Kenya ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 99% share of total imports.
South Africa, with a CAGR of +44.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average paper and paperboard import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -48.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 341%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then plummeted in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while the price for Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+8.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
