The Tanzanian perfume market contracted dramatically to $X in 2022, declining by -86.1% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In 2022, shipments abroad of perfumes and toilet waters decreased by -89.6% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 1,291% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, perfume exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a significant decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 1,170% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Mozambique (X kg), Burundi (X kg) and Zambia (X kg) were the main destinations of perfume exports from Tanzania, with a combined 91% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Burundi (with a CAGR of +78.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for perfume exported from Tanzania were Mozambique ($X), Burundi ($X) and Zambia ($X), with a combined 97% share of total exports.
Burundi, with a CAGR of +63.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average perfume export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 9.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a dramatic decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 929% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mozambique (+19.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Tanzania
In 2022, the amount of perfumes and toilet waters imported into Tanzania shrank notably to X tons, which is down by -85% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 39%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, perfume imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports faced a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 70%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined rapidly in the following year.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) were the main suppliers of perfume imports to Tanzania, together comprising 61% of total imports. Hong Kong SAR, Spain, France, Cote d'Ivoire, India, Indonesia, Turkey and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +73.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of perfumes and toilet waters to Tanzania, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from France amounted to +9.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-25.1% per year) and China (+14.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average perfume import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -10.6% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, perfume import price increased by +10.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+8.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
