Plastic Box Market Size in Tanzania

The Tanzanian plastic box market fell modestly to $X in 2022, declining by -1.5% against the previous year. Overall, the total consumption indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -8.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 60% against the previous year. Plastic box production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Tanzania

Plastic box exports from Tanzania plummeted to X tons in 2022, falling by -17.2% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 132% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic box exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Burundi (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) were the main destinations of plastic box exports from Tanzania, together accounting for 74% of total exports. Zambia, Malawi and Kenya lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Malawi (with a CAGR of +50.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest markets for plastic box exported from Tanzania were Burundi ($X), Uganda ($X) and Kenya ($X), together comprising 66% of total exports. Zambia, Rwanda and Malawi lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

Among the main countries of destination, Malawi, with a CAGR of +53.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the average plastic box export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 20% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a moderate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 70%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kenya (+11.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Tanzania

In 2022, approx. X tons of plastic boxes, cases, crates and similar packing articles were imported into Tanzania; surging by 42% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, plastic box imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a buoyant increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kenya (X tons) constituted the largest plastic box supplier to Tanzania, accounting for a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic box imports from Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Kenya was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+72.6% per year) and China (+30.7% per year).

In value terms, Kenya ($X) constituted the largest supplier of plastic boxes, cases, crates and similar packing articles to Tanzania, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Kenya was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+65.1% per year) and China (+32.0% per year).

In 2022, the average plastic box import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 36%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
