Zambia (X tons) was the main destination for plastic closure exports from Tanzania, with a 35% share of total exports. Kenya (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Zambia stood at +9.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+9.3% per year) and Kenya (+81.8% per year).

In value terms, Zambia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for plastic stoppers, caps and closures exports from Tanzania, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Rwanda ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Zambia stood at +13.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+20.5% per year) and Kenya (+87.2% per year).

Over the period under review, imports recorded a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 419% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic closure imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 394% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

India (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of plastic closure imports to Tanzania, with a combined 68% share of total imports. Turkey, South Africa, Egypt, Germany and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +67.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest plastic closure suppliers to Tanzania were India ($X), Kenya ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 67% share of total imports. Germany, China, Egypt, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

In 2022, the average plastic closure import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 8% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, plastic closure import price increased by +118.4% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
