For the third consecutive year, Tanzania recorded growth in overseas shipments of shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations, which increased by 8.9% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 1,065%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, exports of shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 1,439%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Kenya (X tons) was the main destination for exports of shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations from Tanzania, accounting for a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations to Kenya exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Zambia (X tons), sevenfold. Uganda (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Kenya stood at +77.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zambia (+6.9% per year) and Uganda (+81.5% per year).
In value terms, Kenya ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations exports from Tanzania, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Uganda, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Kenya totaled +86.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zambia (+8.4% per year) and Uganda (+48.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average export price for shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -6.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 202% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Guinea (+6.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Tanzania
Imports of shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations into Tanzania rose significantly to X tons in 2022, picking up by 5.4% compared with the previous year. In general, total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -31.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 48%. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, imports of shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Uganda (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of shampoo, hair lacquer and other preparations to Tanzania, accounting for a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations from Uganda exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Kenya (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by South Africa (X tons), with a 7.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Uganda amounted to +63.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kenya (-12.9% per year) and South Africa (-15.5% per year).
In value terms, Uganda ($X) constituted the largest supplier of shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations to Tanzania, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 9.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 7.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Uganda totaled +75.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-17.4% per year) and Kenya (-13.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average import price for shampoos, hair lacquers and other preparations amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -6.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
