The Tanzanian market for solar cells and light-emitting diodes contracted dramatically to $X in 2022, falling by -21.2% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed buoyant growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, approx. X units of solar cells and light-emitting diodes were exported from Tanzania; dropping by -42.6% compared with the previous year. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 571% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, solar cells and light-emitting diodes exports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 513%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Kenya (X units) and Uganda (X units) were the main destinations of solar cells and light-emitting diodes exports from Tanzania, with a combined 69% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +133.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Uganda ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for solar cells and light-emitting diodes exports from Tanzania, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Uganda stood at +58.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (+56.3% per year) and Nigeria (+58.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average export price for solar cells and light-emitting diodes stood at $X per unit in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 68%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nigeria (+45.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Tanzania

In 2022, approx. X units of solar cells and light-emitting diodes were imported into Tanzania; declining by -22.5% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 131% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, solar cells and light-emitting diodes imports fell sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 63% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest solar cells and light-emitting diodes supplier to Tanzania, accounting for a 82% share of total imports. Moreover, solar cells and light-emitting diodes imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X units), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR (X units), with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +15.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-0.9% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+20.5% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of solar cells and light-emitting diodes to Tanzania, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 4.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 1.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +16.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+6.3% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+30.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average import price for solar cells and light-emitting diodes stood at $X per unit in 2022, surging by 4.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted a mild increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 193% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2021 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
