Spice Market Size in Tanzania

Spice Production in Tanzania

As a result, the yield reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In value terms, spice exports plummeted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by X%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Singapore (X tons) was the main destination for spice exports from Tanzania, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, spice exports to Singapore exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, India (X tons), twofold. Burundi (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Singapore was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (X% per year) and Burundi (X% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for spice exported from Tanzania were Singapore ($X), Indonesia ($X) and India ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates, Germany, Burundi, the UK, Egypt, the Netherlands and Iran lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

Egypt, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average spice export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of X% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burundi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iran (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Spice Imports

Imports into Tanzania

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of spices, when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a modest increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, spice imports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), India (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main suppliers of spice imports to Tanzania, together accounting for X% of total imports. Kenya, Pakistan, South Africa and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Pakistan (with a CAGR of X%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kenya ($X) constituted the largest supplier of spices to Tanzania, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a X% share.
