Umbrella Market Size in Tanzania

In 2022, the Tanzanian umbrella market decreased by -80.2% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Umbrella consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of umbrellas, when their volume decreased by -68.3% to X units. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a notable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 576% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2021, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

In value terms, umbrella exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 561%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Burundi (X units) was the main destination for umbrella exports from Tanzania, accounting for a 38% share of total exports. Moreover, umbrella exports to Burundi exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Uganda (X units), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Burundi amounted to +19.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+48.7% per year) and Uganda (+35.1% per year).

In value terms, Uganda ($X), Zambia ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for umbrella exported from Tanzania worldwide, together comprising 44% of total exports. Burundi, France, Comoros, the UK and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

France, with a CAGR of +65.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average umbrella export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, dropping by -60% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 100%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Burundi ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Comoros (+18.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Tanzania

In 2022, purchases abroad of umbrellas decreased by -76.4% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 214%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, umbrella imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 384%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest umbrella supplier to Tanzania, with a 81% share of total imports. Moreover, umbrella imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X units), more than tenfold. Hong Kong SAR (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +1.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+7.2% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+7.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of umbrellas to Tanzania, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 3.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 3.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+8.4% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+8.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average umbrella import price amounted to $X per unit, waning by -43.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 54% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit) and Kenya ($X per unit), while the price for South Africa ($X per unit) and China ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.
