Unvulcanized Rubber Market Size in Tanzania
In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in the Tanzanian unvulcanized rubber market, when its value decreased by -40.8% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, showed a pronounced increase. Unvulcanized rubber consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Exports from Tanzania
For the fourth year in a row, Tanzania recorded decline in overseas shipments of unvulcanized rubber and articles thereof, which decreased by -62.6% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a significant decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 118%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, unvulcanized rubber exports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a precipitous slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 210% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) was the main destination for unvulcanized rubber exports from Tanzania, accounting for a 64% share of total exports. Moreover, unvulcanized rubber exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kenya (X tons), twofold. Burundi (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 1.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Democratic Republic of the Congo totaled -19.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (-3.7% per year) and Burundi (-14.0% per year).
In value terms, Kenya ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for unvulcanized rubber and articles thereof exports from Tanzania, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Burundi, with a 0.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Kenya stood at +16.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (-29.6% per year) and Burundi (-25.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average unvulcanized rubber export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -23.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded slight growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 107%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kenya (+20.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Unvulcanized Rubber Imports
Imports into Tanzania
In 2022, supplies from abroad of unvulcanized rubber and articles thereof decreased by -32.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, posted mild growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 61% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, unvulcanized rubber imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest unvulcanized rubber supplier to Tanzania, accounting for a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, unvulcanized rubber imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), twofold. South Africa (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +15.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+4.5% per year) and South Africa (+9.1% per year).
In value terms, South Africa ($X), India ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the largest unvulcanized rubber suppliers to Tanzania, together accounting for 87% of total imports. Kenya, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 5.7%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +89.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average unvulcanized rubber import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -27% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 67%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
