In value terms, worked slate exports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Uganda (X tons) was the main destination for worked slate exports from Tanzania, accounting for a 96% share of total exports. Moreover, worked slate exports to Uganda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kenya (X kg), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Uganda stood at +19.9%.
In value terms, Uganda ($X) remains the key foreign market for worked slate exports from Tanzania, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 3.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Uganda stood at +10.4%.
Export Prices by Country
The average worked slate export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 3.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 40% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bahrain (+14.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Tanzania
In 2022, overseas purchases of worked slate decreased by -98.5% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports saw a precipitous descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 130%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, worked slate imports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a sharp slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest worked slate supplier to Tanzania, with a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, worked slate imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), threefold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 20% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to -21.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-31.5% per year) and India (-31.6% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of worked slate to Tanzania, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at -19.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-29.9% per year) and India (-30.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average worked slate import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, worked slate import price decreased by -30.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
