In 2021, the Thai market for hot-rolled steel bars and rods was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In value terms, hot-rolled steel bar and rod exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 33%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hot-rolled steel bar and rod imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Japan (X tons), China (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of hot-rolled steel bar and rod imports to Thailand, together comprising 66% of total imports. South Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.
