Breakfast Cereal Market Size in Thailand

In 2021, the Thai breakfast cereal market decreased by -0.6% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a remarkable increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

For the tenth year in a row, Thailand recorded growth in overseas shipments of breakfast cereals, which increased by 8.3% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 18%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, breakfast cereal exports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Australia (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of breakfast cereal exports from Thailand, together comprising 51% of total exports. These countries were followed by China, Germany, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and Hong Kong SAR, which together accounted for a further 35%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +53.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Myanmar, with a CAGR of +59.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average breakfast cereal export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -1.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of breakfast cereals increased by 3.7% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, breakfast cereal imports stood at $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
