In 2022, the Thai carbon electrode market increased by 1% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, consumption showed a noticeable reduction. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, approx. X tons of carbon electrodes were exported from Thailand; falling by -19.1% on 2021. Overall, exports showed a dramatic decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 356%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carbon electrode exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a dramatic setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 110%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

China (X kg), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X kg) and Singapore (X kg) were the main destinations of carbon electrode exports from Thailand, with a combined 72% share of total exports. Indonesia, the Netherlands, Vietnam, Malaysia, Japan and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +100.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest markets for carbon electrode exported from Thailand were China ($X), Indonesia ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising 61% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +77.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average carbon electrode export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -49.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a measured expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 816% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Myanmar ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Myanmar (+44.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Thailand

In 2022, imports of carbon electrodes into Thailand contracted to X tons, which is down by -11.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 145%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carbon electrode imports reached $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 154%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest carbon electrode supplier to Thailand, accounting for a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, carbon electrode imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Japan (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Malaysia (X tons), with a 4.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-16.1% per year) and Malaysia (-1.6% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of carbon electrodes to Thailand, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +1.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-12.9% per year) and Malaysia (-2.6% per year).

The average carbon electrode import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
