After four years of decline, overseas purchases of caviar (sturgeon) increased by 34% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a dramatic curtailment. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, caviar (sturgeon) imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, China (X kg) constituted the largest caviar (sturgeon) supplier to Thailand, accounting for a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, caviar (sturgeon) imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X kg), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by France (X kg), with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +7.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-17.2% per year) and France (+15.2% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of caviar (sturgeon) to Thailand, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +53.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-13.9% per year) and France (+27.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average caviar (sturgeon) import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -9.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 107%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
