The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 190% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pimenta pepper exports fell to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 115%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for pimenta pepper exports from Thailand, accounting for a 60% share of total exports. Moreover, pimenta pepper exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), fourfold. Myanmar (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Netherlands stood at +18.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lao People's Democratic Republic (+85.8% per year) and Myanmar (+49.7% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the key foreign market for pimenta pepper exports from Thailand, comprising 35% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the Netherlands totaled +19.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+6.3% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+80.6% per year).

The average pimenta pepper export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 33% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Imports into Thailand

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of pimenta pepper, when their volume decreased by -1.7% to X tons. In general, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +22.4% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 36%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pimenta pepper imports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 109%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of pimenta pepper to Thailand, accounting for a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, pimenta pepper imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Myanmar (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from India totaled +2.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Myanmar (+59.8% per year) and China (+5.2% per year).

In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pimenta pepper to Thailand, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 16% share of total imports.
