Copper Foil Market Size in Thailand

After two years of growth, the Thai copper foil market decreased by -25.7% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed strong growth. Copper foil consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In 2022, overseas shipments of copper foil decreased by -24.5% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, copper foil exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 153%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Japan (X tons), China (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the main destinations of copper foil exports from Thailand, with a combined 57% share of total exports. South Korea, India, Vietnam, Taiwan (Chinese), the Philippines and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Philippines (with a CAGR of +66.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($X), China ($X) and Malaysia ($X) constituted the largest markets for copper foil exported from Thailand worldwide, together accounting for 60% of total exports. South Korea, Vietnam, India, the Philippines, Taiwan (Chinese) and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +70.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average copper foil export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 15% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, copper foil export price decreased by -9.0% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 78%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+8.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Copper Foil Imports

Imports into Thailand

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of copper foil decreased by -26% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 67%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, copper foil imports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 86%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), China (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main suppliers of copper foil imports to Thailand, together accounting for 91% of total imports. The United States, India, Macao SAR, Malaysia and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 7.3%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the United States (with a CAGR of +47.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest copper foil suppliers to Thailand were Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), China ($X) and Japan ($X), together accounting for 90% of total imports. The United States, Malaysia, Macao SAR, India and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 8%.

In terms of the main suppliers, the United States, with a CAGR of +35.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average copper foil import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 2.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 13%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+8.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
