Graphite Market Size in Thailand

The Thai graphite market surged to $X in 2021, increasing by 74% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, the total consumption indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports from Thailand

In 2021, approx. X tons of graphite (natural) were exported from Thailand; flattening at 2020. In general, exports showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 1,215%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, graphite exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 135%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) was the main destination for graphite exports from Thailand, with a 44% share of total exports. Moreover, graphite exports to Lao People's Democratic Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Vietnam (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Japan (X tons), with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Lao People's Democratic Republic amounted to +144.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+24.3% per year) and Japan (+1.8% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for graphite exported from Thailand were Vietnam ($X), Japan ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 90% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +147.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average graphite export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 122% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 125%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sri Lanka (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, imports of graphite (natural) into Thailand surged to X tons, rising by 106% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a strong expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, graphite imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

China (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Oman (X tons) were the main suppliers of graphite imports to Thailand, together comprising 63% of total imports. These countries were followed by Brazil, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Germany and the United States, which together accounted for a further 32%.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 42% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (-5.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
