In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in the Thai hairpin market, when its value decreased by -17.5% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted resilient growth. Hairpin consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers decreased by -36.9% to X tons, falling for the seventh year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports faced a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 12%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hairpin exports contracted sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports faced a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 0.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The United States (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) were the main destinations of hairpin exports from Thailand, with a combined 50% share of total exports. Saudi Arabia, Israel, Hong Kong SAR, Singapore, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, India, China and Pakistan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Kuwait (with a CAGR of +51.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for hairpin exported from Thailand were the United States ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Israel ($X), together accounting for 57% of total exports. These countries were followed by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Kuwait, Singapore, China, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan, which together accounted for a further 24%.
Kuwait, with a CAGR of +53.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average hairpin export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 31%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey (+12.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Hairpin Imports
Imports into Thailand
After three years of growth, purchases abroad of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers decreased by -25% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 39%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell significantly in the following year.
In value terms, hairpin imports shrank markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate measured growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 87% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, China (X tons) was the main hairpin supplier to Thailand, accounting for a approx. 98% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to -2.2%.
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of hairpin to Thailand.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +3.6%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average hairpin import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 8.8% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, hairpin import price decreased by -25.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for China.
From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for China amounted to +5.9% per year.
