Mango And Mangosteen Market Size in Thailand
The Thai mango and mangosteen market fell to $X in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced downturn. Mango and mangosteen consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Mango And Mangosteen Production in Thailand
In value terms, mango and mangosteen production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +31.3% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 47%. Mango and mangosteen production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The average yield of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas in Thailand contracted modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. Overall, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 3.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average mango and mangosteen yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The mango and mangosteen harvested area in Thailand expanded to X ha in 2022, growing by 1.8% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 2.8%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the mango and mangosteen harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Mango And Mangosteen Exports
Exports from Thailand
In 2022, shipments abroad of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas decreased by -11.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 42%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, mango and mangosteen exports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 98% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) was the main destination for mango and mangosteen exports from Thailand, accounting for a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, mango and mangosteen exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Malaysia (X tons), twofold. Vietnam (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to China amounted to +11.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+21.2% per year) and Vietnam (-8.4% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for mangoes, mangosteens and guavas exports from Thailand, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with an 8.1% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 5.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China stood at +25.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+28.9% per year) and South Korea (+20.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average mango and mangosteen export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -11.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 39%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+15.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Mango And Mangosteen Imports
Imports into Thailand
In 2022, supplies from abroad of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas decreased by -28.5% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after five years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 1,109% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, mango and mangosteen imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 1,606%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Cambodia (X tons) was the main mango and mangosteen supplier to Thailand, accounting for a approx. 98% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Cambodia totaled +19.3%.
In value terms, Cambodia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas to Thailand.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Cambodia totaled +35.3%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average mango and mangosteen import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 236% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Cambodia.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Cambodia amounted to +13.4% per year.
