Non-Wheat Flour Market Size in Thailand

In 2021, the Thai non-wheat flour market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Non-wheat flour consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-wheat flour production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 8.1% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the amount of non-wheat flours exported from Thailand rose to X tons, with an increase of 1.6% on 2020 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-wheat flour exports dropped to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

China (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the main destinations of non-wheat flour exports from Thailand, together accounting for 43% of total exports. These countries were followed by Hong Kong SAR, the United States, the Philippines, Singapore, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Australia, Cambodia, Taiwan (Chinese) and France, which together accounted for a further 48%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +15.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for non-wheat flour exported from Thailand were China ($X), Japan ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X), together comprising 44% of total exports. Malaysia, the United States, the Philippines, Myanmar, Singapore, Australia, Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, France and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 46%.

Among the main countries of destination, Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +13.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average non-wheat flour export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -3.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 17% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Myanmar ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Myanmar (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the fifth year in a row, Thailand recorded growth in purchases abroad of non-wheat flours, which increased by 15% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 73%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, non-wheat flour imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 67% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The UK (X tons), France (X tons) and Australia (X tons) were the main suppliers of non-wheat flour imports to Thailand, with a combined 79% share of total imports. India, New Zealand, Cambodia, Hungary, Myanmar and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cambodia (with a CAGR of +296.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the UK ($X) constituted the largest supplier of non-wheat flours to Thailand, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Australia, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the UK stood at +27.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+49.9% per year) and Australia (+44.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average non-wheat flour import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 23% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a pronounced reduction. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the price for Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+15.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
