In 2021, the Thai sailboat market decreased by -87.7% to $X, falling for the fourth consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a dramatic slump. Overall, exports posted strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 97% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sailboat exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 385%. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Germany (X units) was the main destination for sailboat exports from Thailand, with a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, sailboat exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X units), sixfold. Italy (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany stood at +66.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+9.6% per year) and Italy (-0.7% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for sailboats for pleasure or sports, with or without auxiliary motor exports from Thailand, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Italy amounted to +7.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (+14.0% per year) and the Netherlands (-5.4% per year).

Overall, imports saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 225% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sailboat imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 337%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The UK (X units), Australia (X units) and Seychelles (X units) were the main suppliers of sailboat imports to Thailand, together accounting for 61% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Seychelles (with a CAGR of +26.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
