Slate Market Size in Thailand

After nine years of growth, the Thai slate market decreased by -16% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a significant expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 48,600%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, slate exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 85,300%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) was the main destination for slate exports from Thailand, accounting for a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, slate exports to Taiwan (Chinese) exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hong Kong SAR (X kg), twofold.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lao People's Democratic Republic (+74.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of slate was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 128%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, slate imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 299%. Imports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
