The Thai tantalum market contracted dramatically to $X in 2022, declining by -89.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a sharp decrease. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

For the third year in a row, Thailand recorded growth in overseas shipments of tantalum, which increased by 51% to X tons in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +95.9% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, tantalum exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United States (X tons), El Salvador (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of tantalum exports from Thailand, together comprising 73% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for El Salvador (with a CAGR of +305.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for tantalum exports from Thailand, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by El Salvador ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Israel, with a 9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States totaled +1.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: El Salvador (+333.1% per year) and Israel (-8.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average tantalum export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to El Salvador (+6.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Thailand
In 2022, the amount of tantalum imported into Thailand contracted significantly to X tons, declining by -26.7% compared with the year before. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 372%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, tantalum imports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 319% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Japan (X tons) was the main supplier of tantalum to Thailand, accounting for a 92% share of total imports. Moreover, tantalum imports from Japan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Czech Republic (X kg), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X kg), with a 1.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Japan stood at +27.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (-8.4% per year) and Germany (+4.0% per year).
In value terms, Japan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tantalum to Thailand, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 4.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 3.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Japan totaled +9.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (+24.8% per year) and Germany (-4.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average tantalum import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+36.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
