Tea Market Size in Thailand
The Thai tea market totaled $X in 2022, with an increase of 2.5% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption continues to indicate buoyant growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of tea decreased by -12.7% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -16.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, tea exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 80%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United States (X tons), China (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) were the main destinations of tea exports from Thailand, together accounting for 62% of total exports. Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Taiwan (Chinese), South Korea and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +32.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for tea exported from Thailand were the United States ($X), Cambodia ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 51% share of total exports. The Netherlands, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Taiwan (Chinese) and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.
Among the main countries of destination, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +46.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average tea export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -9.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 49%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lao People's Democratic Republic (+21.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Thailand
In 2022, the amount of tea imported into Thailand rose sharply to X tons, increasing by 6.1% on 2021 figures. Overall, imports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 126%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, tea imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a notable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 175%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main suppliers of tea imports to Thailand, with a combined 78% share of total imports. Myanmar, Malaysia and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Myanmar (with a CAGR of +33.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest tea suppliers to Thailand were Japan ($X), Indonesia ($X) and China ($X), together comprising 65% of total imports. Vietnam, Malaysia and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
Malaysia, with a CAGR of +27.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average tea import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -10.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
