In 2021, the Thai unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons market increased by 8.8% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

For the third year in a row, Thailand recorded decline in shipments abroad of unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons, which decreased by -21.4% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 425%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports contracted significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 208%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Malaysia (X tons) was the main destination for unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports from Thailand, with a 84% share of total exports. Moreover, unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports to Malaysia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), fivefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Malaysia totaled +132.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lao People's Democratic Republic (+12.0% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-74.2% per year).

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the key foreign market for unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports from Thailand, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Malaysia totaled +123.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lao People's Democratic Republic (+6.0% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-81.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 5.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 417% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (-3.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Thailand

In 2021, purchases abroad of unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons increased by 2.3% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 68%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) constituted the largest unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons supplier to Thailand, with a 63% share of total imports. Moreover, unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons imports from South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Qatar (X tons), twofold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from South Africa totaled +1.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Qatar (+0.2% per year) and Spain (+597.7% per year).

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constituted the largest supplier of unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons to Thailand, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Qatar ($X), with a 25% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from South Africa was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Qatar (-1.3% per year) and Spain (+402.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 9.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 47%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Qatar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Qatar (-1.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
