The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 14%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of waferboards increased by 19% to X cubic meters, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +78.9% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, waferboard exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
South Korea (X cubic meters), Malaysia (X cubic meters) and China (X cubic meters) were the main destinations of waferboard exports from Thailand, with a combined 75% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by South Korea (with a CAGR of +15.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Korea ($X) remains the key foreign market for waferboards exports from Thailand, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by China, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to South Korea amounted to +15.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+7.5% per year) and China (+2.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average waferboard export price amounted to $X per cubic meter, jumping by 24% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 40%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2020 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per cubic meter) and South Korea ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per cubic meter) and Vietnam ($X per cubic meter) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Waferboard Imports
Imports into Thailand
In 2021, imports of waferboards into Thailand reduced remarkably to X cubic meters, with a decrease of -48.7% compared with 2020. In general, imports showed a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 107% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X cubic meters. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, waferboard imports dropped to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 70%. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X cubic meters) constituted the largest supplier of waferboard to Thailand, with a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, waferboard imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X cubic meters), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Vietnam (X cubic meters), with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +8.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+26.3% per year) and Vietnam (+67.5% per year).
In value terms, the largest waferboard suppliers to Thailand were China ($X), Italy ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), together comprising 84% of total imports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, Spain, Malaysia and Germany, which together accounted for a further 14%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +70.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average waferboard import price amounted to $X per cubic meter, with an increase of 72% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, waferboard import price increased by +80.3% against 2019 indices. The import price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Vietnam ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
